About Orangutan River Retreat

Welcome to Orangutan River Retreat

Your Journey into Borneo Begins Here

Orangutan River Retreat invites you to experience Borneo through its rivers, rainforests, wildlife, and communities.
Our journeys take you beyond the usual routes, from the orangutan forests of Tanjung Puting and the protected wilderness of Lamandau to living Dayak culture and the people whose stories are shaping the future of the rainforest.

We believe the best journeys are not about rushing from one place to the next.
They are about taking the time to notice.
The slow movement of a traditional boat along the river.
The quiet of the rainforest at dawn.
An orangutan moving through the trees.
A conversation with someone who has called this landscape home for generations.

Whether you are travelling solo, with a partner, as a family, or with your own private group, we take the time to understand how you want to experience Borneo and shape the journey around you.

Our approach is rooted in responsible travel, conservation, and meaningful connections with local communities. We believe that travel should not simply take you somewhere. It should leave something positive behind.

That may be a tree planted for the future of the rainforest.
A conversation that gives you a deeper understanding of the people and places you visit.
Or simply the knowledge that your journey has contributed to protecting the landscapes that made it possible.

From the first conversation to long after you leave the river, we are here to help shape and support your journey.

Because Borneo is not simply somewhere to visit.
It is somewhere to experience.

Welcome to Orangutan River Retreat

Meet Nisa

For more than eleven years, I have had the privilege of guiding travellers through the rivers, rainforests, and wildlife habitats of Borneo.

My journey began with something quite unexpected: an attempt to overcome my fear of caterpillars.
I started by joining a one-day trip into the rainforest of Camp Leakey. At the time, I never imagined that this simple decision would eventually change the direction of my life.

Over the years, my growing curiosity and connection with nature led me to an opportunity to work as a butterfly research assistant.

My work required patience.
I observed and monitored the remarkable transformation of butterflies through every stage of their lives—from tiny eggs, to larvae, to pupae, and finally into the beautiful butterflies they would become.

What began as an attempt to overcome my fear of caterpillars slowly became something much more meaningful.
It taught me to look more closely.
To be patient.
To appreciate the smallest details.
And, perhaps most importantly, it opened my eyes to the extraordinary beauty and quiet mysteries hidden within the natural world and river.

The forest had changed something in me. The river opened my eyes to the beauty of the world I had once overlooked.
What I once approached with fear became a source of curiosity.
And that curiosity gradually grew into a deep love for river, nature, wildlife, and the many beautiful secrets that continue to reveal themselves to those who take the time to look.

My journey began with a fear of caterpillars. It led me into the forest, and the forest led me to the river.

For generations, the people of Borneo have understood a simple truth: where there is a river, there is life.
Perhaps that is why, for me, the river has always felt like the natural way forward.

And so, the journey continues with Orangutan River Retreat.

One Journey. One Tree.
One Journey. One Tree.

At Orangutan River Retreat, we believe that every journey should leave something positive behind. For every guest who travels with us, we set aside a portion of our profits to plant one tree per person in support of the rainforest. If you would like to plant more, you are warmly welcome to do so. Travel into the forest. Leave something growing behind.
