From an authentic overnight stay in a traditional Dayak house to peaceful nights in the jungle, this journey offers a meaningful connection with the forest, local culture, and the communities that have lived alongside nature for generations.
DAY 1
Pangkalan Bun – Kudangan Dayak Village
The drive takes approximately four hours, carrying you deeper into the interior of Borneo.
By the time you arrive, the landscape has changed once again.
Here, the river gives way to village life, forest paths, and the traditions of the Dayak people.
Take time to walk through the village and meet the local community. You may see everyday life unfolding around you, learn about the traditions that have been passed down through generations, and begin to understand the deep relationship between the Dayak people and the forest that surrounds them.
An Evening in the Dayak Community
As evening arrives, the village comes alive.
You will be warmly welcomed by the local community through a traditional dance ceremony—a moment of connection, celebration, and welcome.
Later, share dinner and traditional drinks with the villagers.
There is no need to rush the evening.
This is a time to sit together, listen to stories, exchange conversations, and experience the warmth of a community that has made the forest its home for generations.
Tonight, you will stay in a traditional Dayak house.
Overnight: Traditional Dayak House
DAY 2
Into the Forest
Route: Jungle Trekking – Waterfall
Included: Local guide, jungle trek, accommodation in the jungle or village, meals as mentioned.
After breakfast, the forest becomes your destination.
Together with your local guide, begin a journey on foot through the rainforest surrounding Kudangan. The exact route may vary depending on local conditions, but the journey often leads towards one of the waterfalls hidden within the forest.
The trail takes you through a landscape shaped by nature and traditional knowledge.
Along the way, you may encounter wildlife, discover the plants and landscapes that form part of the local environment, and learn from Dayak villagers about the skills and knowledge traditionally used to move through and live alongside the forest.
This may include an introduction to traditional hunting techniques, survival knowledge, and the ways generations of Dayak people have understood the forest around them.
The journey is not simply a trek.
It is an opportunity to see the forest through a different perspective.
A Quiet Afternoon by the Waterfall
Eventually, the sound of falling water begins to emerge through the forest.
Arrive at a waterfall hidden within the landscape, where you can take time to swim, cool off, or simply sit quietly beside the water.
Surrounded by rainforest, the atmosphere is peaceful and unhurried.
The waterfall becomes a natural place to pause.
To listen to the water.
To feel the forest around you.
And to enjoy the simple pleasure of being somewhere far from the noise and pace of everyday life.
Tonight, you may spend the night in a tent within the forest, allowing you to experience the sounds of the jungle after dark.
Alternatively, if you prefer greater comfort, it may also be possible to return to the village for the night.
Overnight: Jungle Camp or Dayak Village
DAY 3
The Forest Stays With You
Route: Kudangan Dayak Village – Pangkalan Bun
After breakfast, take time to enjoy your final morning in the forest.
If you have spent the night in the jungle, return to the village and enjoy the changing landscape as the forest gradually gives way to the community once again.
Depending on your interests and schedule, there may be an opportunity to take one final walk through the surrounding forest before beginning the journey back to Pangkalan Bun.
Then, it is time to return by road.
The journey takes several hours, but the experience continues in the memories of the places you have encountered—the village, the forest, the waterfall, the people, and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
By the time you arrive in Pangkalan Bun, a warm shower and a comfortable hotel room may feel particularly welcome.
But perhaps, after several days spent travelling through Borneo's rivers, forests, and communities, you may find that the quietness of the jungle stays with you a little longer.
Discover the rivers, rainforests, wildlife, cultures, and communities of Central Borneo through a journey shaped around you.
