It is a journey to meet the women who teach, create, conserve, and quietly shape the future of Borneo. Along the rivers and through the rainforest, you will discover that empowerment does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes, it is found in a young teacher who leaves her village to pursue an education and returns home to teach its children. In women who protect the forest they love. In young women who are creating new opportunities beyond the expectations traditionally placed upon them.
And, of course, in the extraordinary strength of the rainforest itself.
DAY 1
From the River to the Women of Sekonyer
Route: Pangkalan Bun – Kumai – Kelotok – Tanjung Harapan – Sekonyer Village
Your journey begins as you travel from Pangkalan Bun to Kumai, where your traditional kelotok awaits.
As the boat begins its journey along the Sekonyer River, life gradually slows to the rhythm of the water. Your first wildlife encounter begins at Tanjung Harapan Feeding Station, where you will have the opportunity to observe orangutans in their natural forest environment.
Later, the journey continues to Sekonyer Village, where the focus turns from the forest to the women who help shape the future of their community.
Here, you will meet local women and hear the personal stories of those who are creating change in their own way. Among them is a young female teacher who chose to pursue her education outside the village, working hard to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to return home and educate the children of Sekonyer.
Her story is one of determination, courage, and the belief that education can change the future.
You will have the opportunity to support the children of the village by bringing a small but meaningful gift: educational supplies such as books and stationery.
The afternoon is an opportunity to listen, connect, and understand life in a village where the river and rainforest remain central to everyday life.
Overnight: Kelotok
DAY 2
Retreat to Nature
Route: Sekonyer River – Camp Leakey – Orangutan Trekking – Night Walk
Today is about reconnecting with nature.
Enjoy a slow morning on board the kelotok as you cruise deeper along the Sekonyer River towards Camp Leakey. Take time to watch the forest drift by, listen to the sounds of the river, and keep your eyes open for wildlife along the banks.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience.
Upon arrival, you will take part in a simple conservation contribution: adopting a tree.
For every guest, one tree will be planted as a contribution to the future of the rainforest. Rather than simply passing through the forest, you will leave something positive behind.
Afterwards, set out on a trek of approximately one to two hours to discover the unique character of the rainforest surrounding Camp Leakey. The forest here offers a different experience from the river, with towering trees, dense vegetation, and the possibility of encountering wildlife along the trail.
Your destination is an orangutan observation area, where you may have the opportunity to witness these remarkable animals in their natural environment.
After the trek, return to the kelotok and allow the afternoon to unfold slowly. Enjoy a light snack, relax on deck, and watch the changing colours of the river as evening approaches.
After dark, the rainforest reveals another side of itself.
Set out on a night walk of approximately one hour to discover the nocturnal life of Borneo. Under the cover of darkness, the forest becomes a completely different world.
Return to the kelotok for a peaceful night surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Overnight: Kelotok
DAY 3
Women, Conservation & New Possibilities
Route: Pondok Tanggui – Kumai – Pasir Panjang – Tanjung Terantang Village
Wake to breakfast on board the kelotok as the river carries you towards Pondok Tanggui Feeding Station.
Enjoy the morning atmosphere of the rainforest and the possibility of witnessing orangutans as they arrive at the feeding area.
After the visit, return to the kelotok for lunch before beginning the journey back towards Kumai.
Arrive in Kumai during the afternoon and prepare for the next chapter of the journey: a drive of approximately 30–40 minutes towards Tanjung Terantang Village.
Along the way, stop in Pasir Panjang to meet women from the local community and hear directly about their relationship with the rainforest and their efforts to protect the environment they call home.
For many of these women, conservation is not an abstract idea. It is deeply connected to their daily lives, their community, and their love for the orangutans and the forest around them.
Continue to Tanjung Terantang, where you will meet a new generation of women who are creating their own paths and challenging traditional expectations about the role of women in their community.
Take part in a local cooking class and discover the skills, stories, and flavours that form part of everyday life in the village.
You may also join a traditional handicraft class, learning directly from local women while supporting their creativity and income-generating activities.
This evening, experience village life from within the community itself as you stay overnight in a local homestay.
Overnight: Local Homestay, Tanjung Terantang
DAY 4
From Community to Conservation
Route: Tanjung Terantang – Local Harbour – Lamandau Wildlife Reserve
After breakfast, take time to explore the village and observe daily life in Tanjung Terantang.
This morning is an opportunity to better understand the community and the women whose ideas, skills, and ambitions are helping create new possibilities for the future.
Through local experiences, conversations, and participation, your visit becomes more than tourism. It becomes a way to support local women and small community-based initiatives while gaining a deeper understanding of the people who live alongside the rainforest.
Later, travel to a local harbour and board a traditional motor canoe for the journey towards the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve.
As the river narrows and the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly wild, the experience shifts once again—from community life to the quiet world of the rainforest.
Visit a private orangutan conservation camp and learn more about the efforts being made to protect and rehabilitate these extraordinary animals.
The remainder of the day is dedicated to a true retreat into nature.
Slow down.
Listen to the river.
Watch the forest.
Allow the journey to become quiet.
Return to Tanjung Terantang in the afternoon or evening and spend your final night in the local homestay.
Overnight: Local Homestay, Tanjung Terantang
DAY 5
What you take home
Route: Tanjung Terantang
After breakfast, your journey comes to an end.
But the stories may stay with you.
The young teacher who returned home to teach.
The women finding new ways to create opportunities.
The communities protecting the forest that surrounds them.
The orangutans moving through the trees.
And the river, carrying you quietly from one experience to the next.
Perhaps this is what empowerment looks like.
Not always something loud.
Sometimes, it is a woman choosing to learn.
A woman choosing to lead.
A woman choosing to try something different.
And a community slowly changing, one small step at a time.
EMPOWERED WOMEN
A journey through Borneo's rivers, rainforest, and communities—celebrating the women who are creating change, protecting what they love, and shaping the future in their own way.
This is not simply a journey to see orangutans.
It is a journey to meet the women behind the places you visit.
To listen to their stories.
To support their ambitions.
To learn from their strength.
And to discover that sometimes, the most powerful journeys are the ones that change the way we see the world—and ourselves.
Discover the rivers, rainforests, wildlife, cultures, and communities of Central Borneo through a journey shaped around you.
